Nottingham Forest close in on Zimbabwe Warriors captain Munetsi

HARARE , May 12 (NewsDay Live) — Marshall Munetsi is on the verge of a dramatic Premier League return, with reports indicating that Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement in principle to sign the Zimbabwe captain from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to reports by journalist Santi Aouna and Sports Mole, the 29-year-old midfielder could reunite with coach Vitor Pereira, the man who originally brought him to Molineux before his difficult spell at Wolves unravelled.

Munetsi joined Wolves from Stade de Reims for a reported £17.5 million in early 2025, but injuries and inconsistent form limited his impact in the Premier League.

A calf injury disrupted his momentum, while criticism mounted over his performances during a challenging spell in the English top flight. By January 2026, Wolves opted to send the Warriors skipper on loan to Paris FC.

But the move to France revived Munetsi’s career.

The Zimbabwe international produced a strong run of form in Ligue 1, scoring in three consecutive matches against Toulouse, Nice and Lyon, while also registering a crucial assist in a 2-2 draw against Marseille.

His resurgence quickly reignited interest in his future, with Forest now emerging as favourites for his signature despite Paris FC’s interest in making the deal permanent.

For Zimbabwean football, the potential transfer could carry historic significance.

Should Forest qualify for the UEFA Champions League through their European campaign, Munetsi would become one of the few Zimbabwean captains to feature at the highest level of European club football since legendary goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar.

The move would also provide a major boost for the Zimbabwe national football team ahead of upcoming AFCON and World Cup qualification campaigns.

Sources close to Zimbabwe Football Association are reportedly monitoring developments closely, particularly around player release arrangements for international fixtures should Forest secure European football next season.

While English clubs have historically been cautious over mid-season international call-ups, Forest are understood to have maintained a relatively cooperative relationship with national teams.

Wolves are reportedly seeking to recover around £12 million from the deal, although negotiations are still at an advanced but incomplete stage.

Neither Forest nor Wolves have officially commented on the reports.

For Munetsi, however, a move to the City Ground would represent far more than a transfer. It would mark a remarkable Premier League redemption story for a player many had prematurely written off — and a major moment of pride for Zimbabwean football fans hoping to see their captain back among Europe’s elite.
