HERENTALS FC secured a vital 1–0 victory over Triangle United at Rufaro Stadium yesterday, heading into the international break on a high.

Veteran midfielder Ralph Kawondera emerged as the hero of the day, netting the decisive goal early in the second half to ensure The Students continued their recent resurgence.

The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides struggling to find a breakthrough.

Triangle United came closest to scoring early on, only to be denied by Herentals goalkeeper Marshall Takarinda, who produced a world-class save to turn an Issa Sadiki effort around the post.

However, the deadlock was finally broken shortly after the restart.

Kawondera showed his clinical edge, blasting the ball home from inside the box to give Herentals the lead.

Despite Triangle’s efforts to claw their way back, the Herentals’ backline held firm to secure the three points.

For Triangle, the defeat compounds a miserable start to the campaign.

The Lowveld side remain second from bottom, still searching for their first goal of the season and having lost all four opening matches — each by a narrow 1-0

margin.

Only bottom-placed Manica Diamonds, who have conceded eight goals in four games, sit lower.

In contrast, Herentals have turned their season around.

Back-to-back wins have lifted them to sixth on the log, with seven points from four matches.

Herentals coach Paul Benza admitted concern over maintaining momentum after the international break.

“What happens especially with us is when we win two games in a row, we usually break,” he said.

“When we come back, the form dips. We need a different approach this time and maybe see how it goes.”

Triangle United coach Thomas Ruzive attributed his side’s poor run to a lack of squad depth and registration issues.

“We played well, but the results are not coming,” he said.

“Some of the players, especially the foreigners, are not yet registered,” he said.

“We lack depth at the moment, but once they are, we hope to see better results”

As the league pauses, Caps United top the table with four wins from four matches, followed closely by Scottland in second with eight points.

Dynamos, Ngezi Platinum and Simba Bhora occupy third to fifth spots, while Herentals sit sixth, just one point behind the chasing

pack.

When the league resumes after the international window, Herentals will aim to avoid their historical post-break slump, while Triangle United remain desperate to open their scoring account.
