ZIMBABWE marked its first appearance on the continental stage as the inaugural African Women’s Baseball Championship concluded on Saturday at Callies Dream Park Baseball Fields in Eastlea, Harare.
The three-day event, originally slated to feature Uganda, South Africa and the hosts, turned into a two-team showdown after Uganda’s late withdrawal left only Zimbabwe and South Africa to contest the matches.
In the senior fixture, Zimbabwe fell 5-0 to the experienced South African side, while the Under-18 squad suffered a 4 -1 defeat against South Africa.
Newly-appointed national captain Mildred Masvinge, who led the senior team alongside co-captain Isabel Mhlanga, said despite the losses, the tournament provided a valuable benchmark for the Zimbabwe Ladies Baseball programme,.
“I’m excited to be part of this historic moment, the first-ever appointment of a captain in Zimbabwe Ladies' baseball. I feel deeply honoured to be recognised at this level of play, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead such a talented and dedicated team," Masvinge told NewsDay Sport.
"Working alongside my phenomenal co-captain, Isabel Mhlanga, made the task feel effortless. Her leadership, expertise and passion were invaluable assets to our team."
She commended her teammates for the fight and determination on their continental debut.
"Our team put in tremendous effort, and it was an unforgettable experience to lead these incredible women on the field. The tournament was a true test of skill, strategy and perseverance, especially when we faced off against the talented South African team," Masvinge said.
