The invitational tournament which will run from October 27 to 30 will see world netball powerhouses South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe grace the tournament.
National team captain Perpetual Siyachitema told Newsday Sport before departure yesterday that the Diamond Netball invitational tournament will help the team’s preparations for the World Cup Qualifying matches set for early next year.
“This tournament presents us with the much-needed preparations ahead of the World Netball Qualifying Championships and Africa Netball Championships which will be held early next year, so we are taking this tournament seriously, and we are hoping to bring back a medal,” said Siyachitema.
“The invitation to the tournament comes at a time after the team put up a good show at the recently held Africa netball Championship tournament in Malawi. This is a sign that the sport and our play as a country are on the rise,” said the national team skipper.
The national team captain bemoaned the absence of corporate support.
“People are looking down upon the sport and this has led to poor preparations ahead of international matches as there will be no funds to cater for camping despite some of the achievements that we have made as a national team,” said Siyachitema.
