A LOCAL Mathematics expert and teacher Nation Mupinyuri has released two Grade 7 Mathematics textbooks to help pupils who struggle with the subject easily capture the concepts and succeed in the subject.

The two books – Success in Mathematics Grade 7 (The Topical Maths Book) and Success in Mathematics (Topical Maths Revision with Answers) — were published late last year by Heritage Press in Harare.
Heritage Press founder Wellington Kusema told NewsDay that the books were part of a series from Grade 1 to 7 that the publisher was working on as an alternative to Ventures in Maths that has dominated the subject for decades.
Kusema said the textbooks were PLAP-compliant and were targeted at pupils who often struggled in Mathematics.
“The idea behind these books is to help address the Maths phobia by demystifying Mathematics,” he said. “We are happy that 11 of the questions in last year’s final Grade 7 Maths examination were taken out of this book.”
He said students were set to benefit more because Mupinyuri had classroom experience as a teacher but many Mathematics texts were written by holders of Masters Degrees and PhDs in the subject and often working as engineers without teaching experience.

“The book also gives background information on concepts such as Pythagoras Theorem with narratives to explain the origins of the theory as a way of humanising Mathematics,” he said.
“We also use several diagrams to explain a single concept so that students can quickly grasp them.”
He said the edition with answers at the back was meant to allow parents to coach their children while at home as answers would be available at the back of the book.
