Information minister Christopher Mushohwe confirmed Utete’s death.

“It is true and we are still trying to find more information. We have just received the news that he has passed on and I am going to his house to get further details,” he said.

A career civil servant, Utete resigned as Zimpapers board chairman after serving for two years, having served government for 22 years the major part as chief administrator in Mugabe’s office.

He retired from the civil service in 2003, but remained as board member of a number of private and public companies.

In 2005, Utete was appointed as head of a Presidential Land Review Committee that was slammed for glossing over inadequacies in the chaotic land reform programme.
