KARIBA, Aug. 13 (NewsDay Live) — A memorial service for victims of the Mbuyanehanda boat tragedy will be held this morning at Nyamhunga Stadium, with large crowds expected to gather to mourn those who lost their lives in the Lake Kariba disaster.
The service will be addressed by Mashonaland West Minister of State Marian Chombo, with government officials, traditional leaders, bereaved families and members of the community expected to attend.
The tragedy has plunged the Kariba community into mourning after the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) vessel, formerly known as DDF Mbuyanehanda KF 551, capsized near Long Island while travelling to Chalala Fishing Camp.
The death toll has risen to 44 after 31 more bodies were recovered on Wednesday, according to police. Search and recovery operations are expected to continue today.
Meanwhile, authorities have moved the Mbuyanehanda vessel from the accident site to Musambakaruma Island, where it is now in shallow waters.
Officials said the relocation would make it easier for search and recovery teams to access the vessel and search for any bodies that may still be trapped inside.
The operation involves the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the army and other rescue teams.
Chombo is expected to convey the government’s condolences to bereaved families and outline measures to support those affected by the disaster.

On Wednesday, Chombo was joined in Mahombekombe and Heights by RIDA director-general Christopher Shumba, Chief Nyamhunga, Senator James Gumpo and Deputy Minister of Tourism Tongai Mnangagwa to address affected communities.
Kariba District Development Coordinator Rodwell Mtetwa thanked organisations and individuals who have provided assistance to families affected by the tragedy.
“We want to thank those providing food, clothing, and psychosocial support to the affected families,” he said.
