Four miners die, one still trapped after Chinhoyi mine shaft collapse

Local News
CHINHOYI, Jul. 19 (NewsDay Live) – Four miners have died and another remains trapped after a mine shaft collapsed at Rowdy Boys 4 Mine in Chinhoyi, the police has confirmed. The collapse occurred on July 16 while eight miners were working about 100 metres underground. Police said four miners escaped unhurt, while the remaining four were trapped beneath the rubble. “Rescue teams have so far recovered the bodies of three miners, while one miner remains trapped as search and recovery operations continue,” the ZRP said in a statement. Police said officers are working with officials from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development and other authorities to recover the remaining miner. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending notification of their next of kin. The accident is the latest in a string of fatal mining incidents in Zimbabwe, where safety concerns, particularly at small-scale and artisanal mining operations, continue to result in frequent fatalities.
