BULAWAYO, June 25 (NewsDay Live)-Vulnerable groups in Bulawayo have received an early Christmas cheer following the donation of food hampers by councillor Agnes Munsaka and her Bweezya Community Foundation.

The donation was handed over to the Mayor's Cheer Funnd during a ceremony held at  Large City Hall on Wednesday.

Receiving the donation, mayor David Coltart commended Munsaka and her foundation for leading by example.

"It is heartwarming to see councillors doing this. To you ma'am leading from the front is inspiring, and we hope she will encourage other councillors to do the same," he said.

He also said that the Mayor's Cheer Fund had evolved beyond providing assistance during the festive season, as economic hardships continue to affect many families and institutions throughout the year.

"While it is called the Christmas Cheer Fund, we have increasingly realised that the need for support exists throughout the year," he said.

Five institutions benefited from the donation. These are Ekuphumuleni Geriatric Nursing Home, Percy Ibotson Children’s Home, Ithemba Children's Home, Queen Elizabeth Children's Home, and King George VI Centre.

Mayor Coltart said the institutions play a vital role in caring for vulnerable members of society by providing shelter, education, rehabilitation and healthcare services.

The donation marks another step towards strengthening partnerships between community organisations and local authorities in addressing social challenges and improving the lives of vulnerable residents across the city.

Munsaka, who is director of Bweezya Community Foundation, said "Bweezya" is a Tonga word meaning "take it back", reflecting the organisation's mission of giving back to the community.

She added that the foundation provides assistance to all people regardless of language, background or social standing and encouraged those in need to visit its offices in Emganwini.

"We believe in serving everyone equally, regardless of who they are or the language they speak. Our doors are always open to those in need of assistance, and we warmly welcome anyone seeking help to visit our offices in Emganwini," she added.
