ZIMBABWE is gearing up to host the 8th Africa Spelling Bee Championship, a four-day continental contest set to bring together some of the brightest young linguists from across the region.

The competition got underway in Harare yesterday, and will run until March 21, according to an announcement made by local organisers of the championship.

In a statement, the organisation said the prestigious event aimed to showcase academic talent and foster youth empowerment.

Participating countries include Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, Lesotho, Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire and Rwanda.

According to the Zimbabwe Spelling Bee Championships, the event serves a purpose far beyond simple competition.

“The Africa Spelling Bee Championship is more than a competition; it is a platform that nurtures literacy, builds confidence and fosters unity among young Africans,” the organisation said.

Young spellers will battle it out in both junior and senior categories, with the winners earning the title of Africa Spelling Bee Champion for 2026.

Zimbabwe assumes the hosting baton following the successful staging of the 2025 edition in Nigeria.
