HARARE, Mar. 2 (NewsDay Live) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has denied any involvement in the alleged assault of Lovemore Madhuku and members of his team, saying no officers were deployed to the meeting where the incident reportedly occurred.
In a statement, police said Madhuku and colleagues from the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) had notified authorities of their planned gathering. However, the regulating authority identified irregularities and advised organisers that the meeting was not sanctioned.
As a result, police said no personnel were assigned to monitor or oversee the event.
“The police were not involved in the alleged incident,” national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
The response follows allegations by Madhuku that police officers assaulted him during a confrontation with critics of proposed constitutional reforms.
Madhuku and other civic groups oppose Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, arguing that it undermines citizens’ rights and strengthens parliamentary control over electoral processes.
