Artiste melds reggae, faith and AI in musical comeback

HARARE-BASED gospel artiste, content creator and digital entrepreneur Mawamba Bunjira (pictured) has officially broken his musical hiatus, returning with a groundbreaking AI-infused remix of his powerful single, Handidzokere Shure (I will not go back).

After a period away from the studio to attend to life and other commitments, Bunjira’s return marks an exciting chapter for the local music scene.

It comes at a pivotal time when artificial intelligence is taking the Zimbabwean music industry by storm, particularly within the gospel genre, where artistes are increasingly turning to technology to elevate their sound.

Before his temporary step back from the microphone, Bunjira had captured listeners’ hearts with two poignant singles: Aripo, which served as a reminder of God’s constant presence during difficult times, and Handidzokere Shure.

Reflecting on his signature sound, the Chitungwiza artiste explained how the raw power of reggae music perfectly complements his spiritual message.

“I have always appreciated reggae music because of its strong messages and ability to connect with people from different backgrounds,” Bunjira said.

“Combining reggae rhythms with gospel messages allows me to communicate biblical truths in a unique and uplifting way while maintaining a positive and inspirational sound.”

With many people facing economic and personal uncertainties, Bunjira felt compelled to revive Handidzokere Shure with a modern twist.

The remix introduces a fresh reggae-conscious production, infusing contemporary musical elements while keeping its core message intact: never give up, never go backwards and keep moving forward.

What sets this remix apart is Bunjira’s forward-thinking embrace of new technology.

As AI reshapes how music is produced across Zimbabwe, Bunjira used the technology as a collaborative partner to polish his creative vision.

AI assisted heavily across the creative spectrum — from streamlining production experimentation and arrangement ideas to shaping vocal concepts and refining the overall sonic quality.

“AI was used as a creative production tool to assist with certain aspects of music development and arrangement,” Bunjira said.

“It helped to enhance production quality while allowing me to remain actively involved in directing the creative vision of the project.”

For independent artistes facing tight budgets, Bunjira believes AI is a game-changer that democratises the music industry by unlocking access to resources that were previously expensive or out of reach.

However, he offers a vital piece of advice to fellow Zimbabwean musicians navigating this technological shift.

“Use AI as a tool, not a replacement for creativity. Technology should support your vision, not define it. Focus on your message, your talent and your authenticity while using AI to enhance your work.”

Bunjira’s successful comeback is largely fuelled by his multifaceted background as a digital entrepreneur and content creator.

Instead of relying solely on traditional radio or record labels, he has leveraged his digital literacy to independently promote his music.

Beyond the recording studio, Bunjira has built thriving online communities, notably hosting business WhatsApp groups designed to give local entrepreneurs a platform to network, advertise and expand their market reach.

He is also the founder of Mawamba TV, a popular online media initiative dedicated to broadcasting the sermons of Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa, whose teachings deeply transformed his spiritual life.

Managing these large online communities has taught him invaluable lessons that he applies to music distribution.

“I have learnt the importance of consistency, authenticity, engagement and creating content that adds value to people’s lives,” he said, adding that social media has allowed him to connect with diverse audiences far beyond Harare.

As the public warmly embraces the polished new sound of Handidzokere Shure, Bunjira hopes his journey will inspire the next generation of Zimbabwean creatives to think outside the box.

“Believe in yourself, stay consistent, keep learning and embrace innovation,” he advised young creatives.

“We live in the digital age where opportunities are greater than ever before. Success may not happen overnight, but persistence, discipline and a clear purpose can take you far.”
