Kunaka, posing as a ZERA official, requested fuel samples for testing at ZERA’s mobile laboratory, which was conducted in the presence of employee Tichaona Cherai.

HARARE, Nov 27 (NewsDay Live) – Harare Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki yesterday fined Mount Meru Zimbabwe US$600 after the company was found guilty of selling contaminated fuel.

The State, represented by Mandirasa Chigumira, proved that on October 24, 2023, Shakespear Kunaka, an informant, visited the accused’s premises. There, he observed employees selling diesel.

Kunaka, posing as a ZERA official, requested fuel samples for testing at ZERA’s mobile laboratory, which was conducted in the presence of employee Tichaona Cherai.

Laboratory results revealed that the diesel was blended with lighter petroleum products, failing to meet ZWS751 standards for flash point and density.

The court was informed that the contaminated fuel pump, holding around 9,000 liters of blend petrol, was sealed with tamper-evidence seals. The fuel remains in custody at a site secured by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA).
