CORPORATE entity Impala Car Rental has honoured veteran midwife Nyaradzo Mukau, who delivered thousands of babies in a career spanning 44 years, on her retirement at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.
Mukau (65), was among a cohort of 12 retirees honoured by the company, which has established a tradition of recognising long-serving public health staff.
Impala Car Rental’s marketing manager, Judith Mupinga, said the retirees were dedicated to their work.
“It has become our policy to honour retirees. They have served society with distinction and we are proud to celebrate their achievements, such as Mrs Mukau’s remarkable service,” she said.
The retirees received gifts including solar panels, ox-drawn plough and food hampers.
Mukau’s career, which began in 1981 at Mutare General Hospital, saw her serve at a number of central hospitals before her long-standing posting at Sally Mugabe.
She quantified her impact, revealing that on a standard night shift, she assisted between 30 and 35 mothers — a rate that places the total number of babies she helped to deliver well into the thousands.
“I served with passion. There is no greater reward than seeing a healthy baby placed in its mother’s arms,” Mukau said.

She said nurses should be dedicated to saving lives.
“No nurse wants to lose a life. We enter this profession to save and protect, and that commitment remains,” Mukau said.
She plans to continue living in the city and start poultry and gardening projects, applying the nurturing spirit that defined her four-decade career in the delivery ward.
The hospital administration
lamented the significant loss of expertise.
“We are sad to lose such valuable experience. Their contribution cannot be overstated,” Claudius Rwodzi, human resources manager at Sally Mugabe Hospital, said.
