Two suspected armed robbers who were nabbed by members of the public and severely assaulted before being handed over to police in Beitbridge yesterday

BEITBRIDGE residents yesterday apprehended two armed robbers moments after they shot, robbed and stripped a man of his car and US$26 000 cash.

The robbers attempted to drive away, but their victim wrestled them until the car crashed on a kerb.

The robbers then tried to run away on foot with the crowd in hot pursuit and fired several shots, but missed until they ran out of both ammunition and luck.

Cornered, the robbers tossed a satchel containing the loot into the air hoping to distract the mob which helped itself to the cash first, before meting instant justice on the suspects.

Beitbridge police boss Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo confirmed the incident but said the names of the suspects were yet to be established.

“We thank the public for standing up against these armed robbers. Police were called and we have made arrests. There was mob justice and these robbers were severely beaten,” he said.

The two suspects and their victim were all taken to hospital. The victim was shot on the leg and police recovered a pistol from the suspects.
