AN unemployed man, who demanded money from a Harare man to facilitate the release of his vehicle which had been impounded by police at a roadblock, yesterday appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi to answer to a charge of extortion.

Stanley Mungwaro (37) of Warren Park was granted $200 000 bail.

Allegations were that on December 9, 2022, Nhlanhla Sibanda, who is self-employed, had his car impounded by the police while driving along Emmerson Mnangagwa Road.

The vehicle was taken to Harare Central Police Station.

Sibanda then cleared his vehicle with Zimbabwe National Road Administration, CID Vehicle Theft Squad, Environmental Management Agency and City of Harare, but when he went to Harare Central Police for clearance, he was ordered to see one Assistant Commissioner Nyazema.

As he was leaving, a man who claimed to have experienced a similar problem referred him to Mungwaro, who demanded US$150 from Sibanda to facilitate clearance of his vehicle.

The matter was reported to the police and a trap was set, leading to Mungwaro’s arrest soon after he received the money.

The money was recovered and is being used as exhibit in court.
