Jimmy Makureya has died at 69

Talented Zimbabwean singer and instrumentalist Jimmy Makureya has died aged 69.

His younger brother, Joseph, confirmed the sad news saying the multi-talented instrumentalist succumbed to high blood pressure and diabetes complications on September 8.

“His BP and sugar levels shot up and by the time a car was found to rush him to hospital, it was late,” he said.

“He died while waiting to be served at the hospital.”

In his prime, he performed with notable bands such as Ekhaya, Uthando, and the Runn Family.

He also performed as a bass guitarist for Thomas Mapfumo, the Zig Zag Band as well as on the song Handitabwe Iyoyo by Susan Mapfumo.

Jimmy also mentored his siblings, including Joseph, a popular bass guitarist who was part of the Assegai Crew.

Jimmy was a gifted singer and instrumentalist who shared his musical skills with his family and beyond.

Jimmy is survived by wife Maybe and five children ---- Epiphania, Jimmy, Nomsa, Sibongile and Melody in that order, who all have their own families.

Funeral details are yet to be announced, but mourners are gathered at 15 Mutangadura Old Location, Sakubva in Mutare.
