AMHVoices:Free Zimbabweans enslaved in Kuwait

AMH Voices
Recently, our nationals were lured to oil-rich Kuwait, a country known for making foreigners slaves and sex workers.

No place is better than home, runs the old English adage. Most Zimbabweans, who have left the country in search of greener pastures, will confirm this. We failed to make our garden gold, green and yellow for our children to play due to a number of reasons. A number of factors, mainly economic ones, have forced our nationals — especially the young — to cross our borders.

Life is not so rosy for most of them. In Botswana, Zimbabweans are lashed by chiefs on allegations of committing minor offences and the Botswana government is said to be unable to stop this as the traditional leaders have powers to deal with petty issues. There are also over 500 Zimbabweans in prisons in Botswana.

South Africa, where a huge number of Zimbabweans have flocked to, is one country where foreigners are often beaten and burnt to death. A number of our nationals, including students, have suffered or faced mysterious deaths.

Zimbabweans are risking their lives as their neighbour is known for xenophobic attacks. We also have cases of our nationals trapped to death in some illegal mines.

We have some locals crying for help, home is where the heart is. They want to come back home. This is really touching the nation’s hearts.

If one American is in trouble, all Americans become concerned and the State will either send a plane for rescue purposes or negotiate for their release.

France responded in November 2015 by despatching bombers to Syria in retaliation for the massacre of its citizens.

Russia did the same in retaliation after its citizens died in a plane that was downed by Islamic State terrorists killing all passengers. On the Kuwait issue, all Zimbabweans should be united and pray for the enslaved Zimbabweans’ release while the government is negotiating.

In future we should only respond to adverts to study or work in foreign countries if our government is involved to save us from such painful experiences.
