Newboys Mutare City Rovers scout for talent

NEWLY-promoted Castle Lager Premier Soccer League side, Mutare City Rovers will begin preparing for the tougher proposition of the top-flight league by searching for new talent in a week-long trials programme that begins today.

Rovers, who will be the only representative from Mutare, after Buffaloes were relegated, will be hoping to at least avoid the chop in their maiden season.

Players from across the province and other parts of the country are expected to converge at Mutare Sports Club today to try and convince the coaches, led by Kennedy Kachara, that they have what it takes to play for the club.

“We are conducting our trials starting today,” Kachara said. “We are inviting all players who believe that they can make it into our squad, we are open to everyone.’’

“We have a number we want, but this week, we will try to have as many players we believe are good. There are good young players out there, but they have never been given the chance to showcase themselves.”

Kachara, who will be making his debut in the elite league, believes he will be good enough.

“I think I will be up to the task in the Premier League. Football is tough in the Eastern Region Division One Football League, so I am ready for the big challenge,” he said.

Mutare City had to shrug off stiff competition from Masvingo United and Hartley Academy, only winning the championship and promotion on the last day of the season.

Rovers amassed 69 points from 34 matches, while Masvingo had 68 points, the same as Hartley, but had a superior goal difference.

The Mutare Municipality-owned side is set to build their team around former Buffaloes players, defender Patrick Alfasi, Prince Mudau and Dylan Chiwandire.
