Last week, the magistrates’ court remanded the footballer in custody to May 4, when he is expected to appear to answer the charges.

Mwanjali was advised to apply for bail at the High Court due to the serious nature of the allegations and yesterday, he finally tasted freedom.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns player was arrested together with teammate Archford Gutu in the early hours of Sunday April 17 following a brawl with Nhunzvi and three other men that he [Nhunzvi] was in the company of.

A medical report that was produced in court showed that Nhunzvi had been bruised and not stabbed as was earlier reported.

CAPS United board chairman Advocate Lewis Uriri, who is part of the player’s legal team, said Mwanjali’s application was successful partly because the victim’s life was not in any form of danger.

“He has been granted $100 bail. According to the medical report, the victim was not in any form of serious danger. He was operated on, yes, but the reports that he was in the intensive care unit are not correct,” Uriri said.

Gutu, who has been charged with malicious damage to property as he is accused of smashing the rear windscreen of Nhunzvi’s car, was given $100 bail by the magistrates’ court last week.

Former Warriors captain Mwanjali was given the armband to lead the Green Machine before the start of the season, having spent five years playing his club football in South Africa.

Gutu also returned home this year and had been earmarked to join his former club Dynamos, but opted for Caps United at the last minute. Their arrest and court process saw them both missing Caps United’s match against Harare City on Sunday.
