The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) hopes the women’s national volleyball league will be introduced next year to improve the quality of play after the women’s teams fared badly in the Zone V1 Club Championships held in Namibia last week.
Panthers, JS Harare and Jewels represented the women’ section while Railstars and Stanbic Thunder represented the men’s sections.
ZVA secretary-general Taringisai Mapondera yesterday said they were aiming at ensuring the women’s league is re-introduced next year.
“We need to ensure that the women’s league starts next year. The teams performed badly because they were not playing competitively. If they play in a competitive league they can also play well against clubs from other countries,” he said.
The women’s representatives were chosen using the ZVA Ladies Club Championships that were played in Harare in October.
JS Harare won three games against Revivals from Namibia, Red Skins and fellow Zimbabwe side Panthers but lost to Namibia’s KNVC, and Kavalango from Botswana.
Jewels played Tshwane University of Technology, Government Printers from Zambia, Mafolofolo and Kutlwano from Botswana and Namibia Defence Forces but they did not register a single victory.
Panthers also lost all their games against KNVC, Revival, Red Skins and Kavalango.

National men’s volleyball championship Railstars put up a good show as they won against Agotso from Botswana, Botswana Defence Forces, KNVC and Red Skins.
They lost 3-1 to Botswana’s Diphatsa to bow out of the competition.
Stanbic Thunder beat MCEL of Mozambique, Namibia Defence Forces and Nhlanganiso from Swaziland but failed to proceed after they lost to Kutlwano and University of the Western Cape.
Mapondera said they were happy with the developments noted in the sport this year.
“National team coaches Itsanang Abu-Basutu and Jasper Moyo attained a Level Two Coaches Certificate in Lesotho which will further assist our teams. We have also noted that we have a lot of potential in beach volleyball,” he said.
