ZIMBABWE'S leading junior golfers will converge at Police Golf Club tomorrow for the President's Cup Junior Golf Championship, with Zambezi Gas & Coal Mine reaffirming its commitment to developing the sport from the grassroots.
The two-day championship, which runs on August 7 and 8, serves as the junior version of the prestigious President's Cup Pro-Am that was staged in Bulawayo ahead of the country's 46th Independence celebrations.
It also comes on the heels of a thrilling Zimbabwe Amateur Championship, where Keegan Shutt completed a record-breaking comeback to claim an unprecedented third national title, highlighting the growing depth of local golf.
Shutt, who finished on six-over-par 294 after rounds of 78, 77, 68 and 71, became the first golfer to win the Zimbabwe Amateur Championship three times, adding to his previous triumphs in 2022 and 2024. The victory was all the more remarkable after he found himself tied for 19th and eight shots off the lead following the opening round before climbing to ninth after round two, second after the third round and eventually winning by five strokes.
Zambezi Gas & Coal Mine, which also sponsored the Zimbabwe Amateur Championship, is now turning its attention to nurturing the next generation of champions through the President's Cup Junior Championship.
Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony at the Zimbabwe Amateur Championship, Zambezi Gas & Coal Mine official Matthew Raradza said the company's vision extended beyond sponsoring tournaments to taking golf into every corner of the country.
"We, as Zambezi Gas, are proud of the relationship that we have with golf in Zimbabwe. We are proud of our relationship with Zimbabwe golf, with the President's Cup. And above all, we are proud of the relationship that we have in terms of junior development.
"Our passion is to be the power that builds up our junior golf in Zimbabwe, that goes to the grassroots. You know, like our President always says, leaving no one and no place behind. We are looking to develop golf in the furthest parts of our nation.

"We are looking to bring not only the city-grown juniors, but we also want to go rural. We want to go to every corner of this nation and bring golf to every child who desires to play golf in this nation.
"Like we always say, we are tired of being beaten by South Africa at the Zimbabwe Open. We believe the reason why we have been falling behind is because we do not have sufficient grassroots and junior development. That is where we are coming in and that is where we are looking to develop."
The President's Cup Junior Championship is expected to showcase many of the country's brightest young talents, several of whom made a significant impression during last week's Zimbabwe Amateur Championship.
Among the leading contenders is 15-year-old Munesu Chimhini, who announced himself as one of Zimbabwe's rising stars after finishing joint second on 12-over-par 300, just six shots behind champion Shutt.
Another player to watch is 14-year-old Nathaniel Zidya, who enjoyed a breakthrough tournament on his home course. Zidya fired a superb two-under-par 70 to lead after the opening round before eventually finishing fourth on 14-over-par 302, underlining his immense potential.
Former Zimbabwe Amateur champion Nathan van Rooyen will also be eager to return to winning ways, while Ayanda Ndlovu continues his rapid rise after becoming the youngest player ever to compete in the Zimbabwe Amateur Championship. Other highly-rated juniors expected to feature include Peter Sanders and Toby Ellis.
The girls' competition is also expected to provide plenty of excitement.
Miriam Masiya will head into the championship full of confidence after claiming her maiden Zimbabwe Amateur Championship winner's medal last weekend. She is expected to face strong competition from Listiah Bangura, Rosebud Musakasa and several other promising young golfers.
With one of Zimbabwe's leading corporate sponsors investing heavily in junior golf and a field packed with emerging talent, the President's Cup Junior Championship is expected to provide a glimpse of the country's golfing future while advancing efforts to broaden the sport's talent pipeline.
