The Zimbabwe Davis Cup team maintained a flawless record in the Davis Cup Africa Group IV Pool stages, defeating Angola 2 - 1 in Nairobi, Kenya, today to finish top of the standings ahead of tomorrow’s critical promotional playoffs.
After launching their campaign with a dominant 3 - 0 whitewash over Mozambique on Wednesday, the team secured a spot in the playoffs with a game to spare by edging out the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 2 - 1 on yesterday.
Today's final group fixture against Angola served as a direct battle to determine the pool's top seed.
Ronan Mtisi gave Zimbabwe a flying start in the singles, dispatching Emerson Pedro in straight sets, 6 - 4, 6 - 3. However, Courtney Lock stumbled in his singles rubber, falling in straight sets (6 - 2, 6 - 2 ) to Angola’s Domingos in 1 hour and 16 minutes.
With the tie on the line, Lock and Mtisi joined forces in the doubles decider, battling past Domingos and Pedro 6 - 3, 7 - 6 in 1 hour and 37 minutes to seal the victory and maintain Zimbabwe's unbeaten streak.
Zimbabwe faces Ghana tomorrow morning, with a coveted ticket to the Davis Cup Africa Group III for 2027 at stake.
Ghana advanced after finishing second in Pool B behind Algeria, who also boasted a perfect three-from-three group stage record.
Algeria will take on Pool A runners-up Angola in the other promotional playoff, with the winner also earning promotion.
