Day one of the CAVB Zone VI Senior LA28 Qualifiers at Sunrise Sports Club in Harare delivered a tale of two Zimbabwes on Wednesday, with the women's team producing a dominant performance to claim a convincing opening victory while the men's side suffered a frustrating defeat that has made their qualification campaign significantly more challenging from the outset.
The women set the tone for the home side, sweeping Namibia 3-0 in straight sets with a commanding display that gave the home crowd at Sunrise Sports Club plenty to cheer about.
Zimbabwe took all three sets convincingly, winning 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20, a result that demonstrated a clear superiority in all departments and sends a strong message to their remaining opponents Malawi and Zambia ahead of the next two days of competition.
The men's team, however, found the going considerably tougher when they faced Zambia in the evening fixture. Despite winning the opening set 35-33 in a tightly contested opener, Zimbabwe were unable to sustain that level and Zambia took control of the match, winning the next three sets 25-21, 25-22 and 25-16 to claim a 3-1 victory and leave the hosts with an immediate mountain to climb in their LA28 qualifying campaign.
