Mwaruwari faces former paymaster

Ngezi head coach, Mwaruwari

BUBBLY after burying Hardrock, Highlanders head coach Benjani “The Undertaker” Mwaruwari faces his former employer Ngezi Platinum Stars in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash at Barbourfields tomorrow.

Mwaruwari began his top-flight coaching career at Ngezi Platinum Stars in 2022, but his tenure lasted just 13 matches before he was sacked following a poor run of results.

He disappeared from the local football scene for four years after his dismissal before returning to take charge of his childhood club, Highlanders.

As Ngezi head coach, Mwaruwari managed a 1-1 draw against his current team in April 2022, before being shown the door three months later.

The former Warriors captain subsequently took his dismissal case to Fifa, where he was awarded more than US$500 000 for unfair dismissal.

Legal matters aside, Highlanders now prepare to face Ngezi Platinum Stars, the only club yet to lose a match in the league this season.

If form is anything to go by, Ngezi Platinum, under the mentorship of Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva, are favourites to win.

They have recorded five wins and eight draws, sitting third on the log with 22 points; four behind leaders Caps United.

Highlanders appear to have picked up form, winning their last two matches against Triangle and the highly-rated Hardrock.

Before that, they had played eight draws, suffered one loss, and recorded a solitary victory against Chicken Inn.

Mwaruwari says confidence is returning to the Highlanders camp.

“Team spirit around us is way up there. Hopefully, we will improve on the areas we did not do well (on Wednesday). If you win like this,  you forget the mistakes that you made. We have to keep working hard. Football is a process, we are still building, and we are heading in the right direction,” Mwaruwari said.

Highlanders sit 10th on the table with 17 points, five behind Ngezi Platinum and nine shy of log-toppers Caps United.

Historically, Ngezi Platinum have struggled at Barbourfields, where Highlanders often prove difficult to beat.

Ngezi go into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw against TelOne at Baobab Stadium on Wednesday.
