HARARE Metropolitan Cricket Association 1st League action, the Vigne Cup, resumed over the weekend with four teams pocketing points and four left empty-handed as the 2026 season kicked off at a blistering pace.

At Old Georgians Sports Club, fans were treated to a high-scoring encounter between SOGO Rangers and visitors Rainbow Cricket Club.

Both sides produced centuries in an entertaining contest. Dane Schadendorf led the scoring for SOGO with a blistering 125 off 80 balls, while veteran Robertson Chinyengetere responded with a composed 105 off 131 deliveries for Rainbow.

Batting first, Rainbow posted 255/6 in their 50 overs. SOGO’s Tadiwanashe Nyangani was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2 for 46 in his 10-over spell.

The hosts successfully chased the target in 37.1 overs, reaching 256/6 to secure a four-wicket victory and collect two points. Jarrod Basson contributed a valuable half-century to anchor the chase. At Takashinga Cricket Club, Takashinga Patriots 2 defeated Uhuru Cricket Club by five wickets.

Takashinga skipper Kudzai Maunze led from the front with 81 off 82 deliveries, while Ryan Kamwemba added 69 off 82 balls as the hosts chased down Uhuru’s 228 all out to finish on 231/5 in 37.4 overs.

Marshall Takodza was Uhuru’s top scorer with 70 off 82, while Shelton Mazvitorera added 36. Tatenda Chimugoro starred with the ball for Takashinga 2, claiming 3 for 40 in nine overs, while Daichi Nyandoro and Tinotenda Zimunhu picked up two wickets each.

Elsewhere, Gladiators beat Old Hararians by five wickets at Old Hararians Sports Club, while Alex defeated Takashinga Patriots 1 by 56 runs after the Highfield-based side failed to chase down 192, bowled out for 136 in 27.3 overs.

Meanwhile, the Vigne Cup 1st League is now being streamed live on YouTube and Facebook as the competition moves into digital broadcasting for the first time.

Eagles general manager Moses Chitare announced the rollout yesterday.

“Fans, players, and supporters will now be able to follow the action in real time from across the league,” Chitare told NewsDay Sport.

Selected matches broadcast on Facebook will feature live commentary to provide what Chitare called “deeper insight, expert analysis, and an enhanced match-day experience.”

Other fixtures will stream without a voice-over.

“This initiative represents a significant step forward in the growth of the game, increasing visibility for players and bringing the Vigne Cup closer to the community and cricket lovers,” Chitare said.

All streams will be free to access, with links posted on the association’s official Facebook page and on individual club channels ahead of each round.

The league expects the digital shift to expand viewership beyond ground attendance and give players added exposure for provincial and national selection. No changes to the competition’s title sponsorship were announced with the broadcast move.
