THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has appointed former Sables international, Takunda Chifokoyo, general manager, effective this month.

The appointment is part of a broad governance and administrative reform programme being implemented by the Interim Management Committee (IMC), which was appointed by the Sport and Recreation Commission.

In a statement, the IMC said Chifokoyo’s appointment forms part of the reforms that were outlined and communicated to stakeholders in October, aimed at strengthening the union’s operational and governance structures.

Chifokoyo brings extensive experience both on and off the field. A familiar figure in Zimbabwean rugby, he represented the Zimbabwe Sables at senior international level, making his debut during the 2012 Rugby Africa Cup. He earned nine international caps, with his playing career concluding in the 2013 Rugby World Cup repechage match against Russia.

Since transitioning into administration, Chifokoyo has enjoyed notable success. He has served as team manager of the Zimbabwe Sables since 2023, overseeing the coordination of national team operations.

During his tenure, the national team achieved historic back-to-back Rugby Africa Cup titles in 2024 and 2025, securing qualification for the Rugby World Cup.

Chifokoyo is a World Rugby-certified manager and has been involved in the administration of several national teams, working closely with technical, medical and operational support structures.

The IMC said his appointment underscores its commitment to strengthening the operational core of the ZRU.

It also highlighted his professional background in the financial services sector, which has equipped him with experience in structured reporting, governance processes and operational controls.

Chifokoyo assumes the role at a pivotal time for Zimbabwean rugby, tasked with consolidating recent on-field success while helping to establish a stable and robust administrative foundation for the union.
