ZIMBABWE’S rising golf stars, Munesu Chimhini and Miriam Masiya, clinched gold medals at the Africa Youth Games in Angola on Sunday

ZIMBABWE’S rising golf stars, Munesu Chimhini and Miriam Masiya, clinched gold medals at the Africa Youth Games in Angola on Sunday, delivering the country’s first-ever gold medals at the continental competition.

The duo produced outstanding performances at Mangais Golf Resort, with Masiya winning the girls’ individual stroke play title and Chimhini claiming gold in the boys’ event, showcasing remarkable composure against Africa’s top youth golfers.

Despite their tender ages — Masiya is just 16 while Chimhini is 14 — the two are already established figures on the local amateur circuit, regularly competing and winning against much older players.

The success on the continental stage has further underlined their immense potential.

Masiya dominated the girls’ competition over the 54-hole event, entering the final round as the leader before firing a composed 1-under-par 71 to seal victory. Her consistent play where she carded 71, 72 and 71, saw her finish the tournament on an overall 2-under-par 214, winning the gold medal by a commanding 17 strokes.

In the boys’ category, Chimhini produced a superb final-round charge to snatch gold after trailing earlier in the tournament. He carded an outstanding 3-under-par 69 to finish on 1-under-par 215, securing victory by two shots, with rounds of 72, 74 and 69.

The young golfers were guided by national junior coach Simon Murungweni, whose role was widely acknowledged in the team’s success.

The Zimbabwe Golf Association  hailed the achievements, describing them as a major milestone for junior golf in the country.

"Congratulations to coach Simon Murungweni, Munesu Chimhini and Miriam Masiya on winning gold medals at the Africa Youth Games in Angola. This is highly commendable, as it is also a testament that our junior golfers are a force to reckon with on the African continent," the association wrote on its  social media platforms.
