ZIMBABWEAN mixed martial arts fighter Themba Gorimbo’s quest for a first UFC victory was denied once again last night, as he fell to a unanimous decision defeat against Jeremiah Wells at UFC Vegas 110.

The loss marks Gorimbo’s second consecutive setback in the Octagon, following a rapid first-round defeat late last year.

The 33-year-old welterweight went the distance this time, engaging in a competitive three-round battle, but the judges ultimately sided with his American opponent, scoring the fight 29-28 across the board for Wells.

The fight saw Gorimbo, who is famously a favourite of Hollywood star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, immediately look to employ his grappling. In Round One, he secured an early takedown, controlled Wells on the mat, and even attained full mount, surrendering over three and a half minutes of control time to the Zimbabwean.

However, Wells consistently fought his way back up, showing resilience and eventually securing crucial moments of his own. In the second round, Gorimbo again worked for a takedown but nearly walked into a dangerous guillotine choke attempt from Wells. While he escaped, the tables began to turn later in the fight.

Round Three proved decisive for Wells. After another Gorimbo takedown attempt was countered with a guillotine, Wells patiently worked his way back to his feet and landed a significant double-leg takedown.

He then passed straight into full mount, working for a potential arm-triangle choke and delivering a barrage of

elbows to close out the round and secure the unanimous decision victory.

This hard-fought decision loss comes on the heels of a far more devastating performance just last December, where Gorimbo was defeated by veteran Vicente Luque in under one minute.

Gorimbo has three wins in UFC under his belt.
