FORMER Zimbabwe cricketer and now TV presenter Mpumelelo “Pommie” Mbangwa was the biggest winner at the South African Breweries (SAB) Sports Media Awards 2012 on Thursday night after he scooped three awards at a function held at Wanderers Cricket Club.

The Plumtree-born former fast bowler — who now works as a presenter for Africa’s giant subscription television network SuperSport — won the SAB Sports Commentator of the Year (Television), SAB Sports Presenter of the Year (Television) and the overall 2012 SAB Sports Media Award for Television.

The overall Television Contributor of the Year is awarded to the person who has made the largest contribution to TV sports journalism over the year and carries a R25 000 prize money. For the other two awards, Mbangwa received R6 000. Mbangwa was the only journalist who managed to win three awards on the night.

The 36-year-old Mbangwa played fifteen Tests and twenty nine one-day-internationals for Zimbabwe.

After being dropped from the international side after the 2002 Champions Trophy, he took up work as a cricket commentator for television and he remained in that line of work since.
