HARARE, Jun. 16 (NewsDay Live) -The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has urged calm and restraint among stakeholders as police investigate a firearm-related incident and assault case that occurred during a schools rugby match between Eaglesvale College and Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Harare on Saturday.

The incident allegedly involved a parent who stormed into the field of play during the match and assaulted a referee and a player.

Police said investigations were underway.

"The ZRP confirms that investigations are currently underway in connection with a firearm incident and assault case which occurred at Eaglesvale College, Harare on 13 June 2026," police said.

Responding to the incident, the SRC said it was deeply concerned by reports emerging from the fixture and stressed the need to uphold the core values of sport.

"As the national regulator of sport in Zimbabwe, the SRC firmly upholds the values of sportsmanship, respect, discipline, fair play and the safety and well-being of all participants, officials and spectators," SRC director-general Allen Mavunga said.

He added that sporting venues, particularly those involving children and young people, must remain safe environments where competition is conducted in a spirit of mutual respect.

"The welfare of the young athletes is paramount," Mavunga said.

The SRC called on parents, schools, supporters and members of the public to allow the police to complete their work without interference.

The SRC also warned against the circulation of unverified information that could compromise the investigations.
