Sermon of the week with Pastor Erasmus Makarimayi

I always hear people nostalgically reminiscing the past and wondering if the future and the present will better the past.

Who imagines she/he can build a bigger and better structure than the great Zimbabwe? Imagine if all the time wasted and energy expended in gossiping, political violence, smoking marijuana and drinking Zed under the street tower light was directed to break and set records! I posit that with the right mind, attitude and spirituality you can go beyond what your forbearers set.

It is God’s principle to match and surpass what has hitherto been accomplished. Jesus teaches His disciples this principle and says in John 14:12, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” Life has to be progressive.

Aim to better the achievements of your parents. Independent Zimbabwe has to be better than colonial Zimbabwe or is it Rhodesia.

Post industrialised world has to be better than the pre-industrialised world.

Sometimes you feel belittled when you compare yourself with what is already on the market.

Many people have shelved promising plans because they felt they did not meet the standard.

Fear, procrastination, low self esteem coupled with half-baked preparations stop people from engaging in meaningful progress.

When you have done all the preparation that is within your control, it is time to launch. I am persuaded to follow the advice of Mark Victor Hansen who says, “Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.”

Sometimes we spend more than necessary time in the laboratory theorising and evaluating.

We sometimes let God down. He ends up using the next available person. Haven’t you ever prayed, fasted, sowed and believed for a business idea and wasted all your time pondering on the complexity of the project or venture only to see it being launched next door or across the street. While you are dreaming of importing goods or setting up the vision, someone is already at the border with the goods. Wake up, lest you go down to the grave with your incredible dreams!

As you study people that did great things in the Bible you will notice that they still thought they were not yet ready and weren’t equipped and not the right choices. However, God went ahead and used them to show that the grace of God is all what matters. Gideon is an example of someone who achieved great conquests even though he thought that he was an amateur.

God says to him in Judges 6:14, “And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?” The little that you think you have plus the hand of the Lord will see you through. He sent you so you have His backing.

As they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Make the bold decision today. When you feel like drowning, learn to swim. Don’t be discouraged; everyone who got where she/he is had to begin where she/he was. Indeed not many will agree you have a calling and that you have what it takes and that you will make it. I like the opinion by Arthur Schopenhauer.

He says, “Every truth passes through three stages before it is recognised. In the first, it is ridiculed. In the second, it is opposed. In the third, it is regarded as self evident.” There are those that seem to have been born for criticism, ignore them and move on.

It is wiser to make the right move now. Don’t you feel you have been too stagnant? Grow through life, don’t just go through it. Sometimes you don’t have to wait for the iron to be hot to strike, but make it hot by striking it.

Take action and move on. Mark Twain teaches, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” Be challenged by Joe Girard who says, “The elevator to success is out of order. You’ll have to use the stairs . . . one step at a time.” Make the right and necessary step, you are going somewhere.
