DZIMBANHETE Arts Interactions are set to hold a mbira orchestra to celebrate the ancient music instrument and demystify claims that it is associated with the demonic spiritual world, but is purely a music instrument, on August 6 under the theme, Mazwi Epasichigare.

Dzimbanhete founder, Chikonzero Chazunguza, said the orchestra will showcase seven mbira tunes — Nhemamusasa, Mahororo, Chakwi, Mavembe, Bangiza, Nyabango and Taireva — supported by drums and percussions.
“The mbira, for ages, has carried our narratives as a generation. I know, for many of our colonised minds, anything that has to do with our ancient history is either backward, demonic and unworthy, but it is important to acknowledge that classic music has come a long way in European culture, yet no one labels it demonic,” he said.
Chazunguza said mbira music was important, as a reminder of history and culture.
“Mbira music, as a genre, is authentic. It can be attributed as the only original Zimbabwean music,” he said.
The orchestra will feature some mbira legends such as Joyce Warikandiwa, Benita Tarupiwa, Chipo Wazara and Mbira Dzenhapitapi, among others.
Dzimbanhete Art Interactions initiated the mbira orchestra concept in 2014, attracting over 30 mbira players to performing platform.
