Mayor Charles Chikozho said council was inundated with requests by residents who wanted more residential space at the new suburb as most stands measured between 150 and 200 square metres.

“Many people are coming to us saying they want at least 300 square metres and the relevant departments have since attended to the matter to ensure the requests are granted,” he said.

“We see no problem with such requests because, in any case, the 150 square-metre stands are not selling fast.” The cash-strapped local authority put the unserviced 6 733 stands on the market in 2015, but only started servicing them recently.

Meanwhile, rehabilitation of roads in the city has started after the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration approved funding under phase two of the programme.

Town clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza said Bitumen World (Pvt) Ltd, which is undertaking the work, was awarded a $2,3 million tender under the emergency roads rehabilitation programme.

“The roads earmarked under this phase are Senga roundabout to Midlands State University, as well as some parts of Mkoba.”
