A 23-year-old man from the Nkayi area in Matabeleland North appeared in court on Wednesday facing an incest charge after he allegedly impregnated his 17-year-old sister.

The two, who cannot be named to protect the girl’s identity as a minor at law, were remanded out of custody to July 12 for trial.

They were both not asked to plead to the charge when they appeared before Nkayi resident magistrate Thabekhulu Dube.

The court heard that the pair’s affair started sometime in February last year and was discovered by relatives in June this year.

The man proposed love to the girl at the time when she was 16 years old and she accepted the proposal.

The two were staying together at the same home with their parents. It is alleged, the man later left for work in Bulawayo, leaving his sister behind.

Sometime this year, the girl told her parents that she had secured employment in Bulawayo and she left.

The court heard that on arrival in the city she did not go to work as indicated, but stayed with her brother as his “wife”.

The two allegedly became intimate, resulting in her falling pregnant.

The three-month pregnancy was discovered recently following a visit by one of the relatives. The relative immediately informed other family members, who later made a police report. Maxwell Hapanyengwi prosecuted.
