The ruling in the application for refusal of remand by Women of Zimbabwe Arise (Woza) leader Jenni Williams and 10 of her colleagues facing charges of being a “criminal nuisance” was yesterday set for Monday.

The charges arise from a demonstration in the Bulawayo city centre during which the women allegedly distributed flyers whose messages were not mentioned in court on February 6.

The Woza members, through their lawyer Lizwe Jamela, argued they should not be placed on remand since the facts brought before the court did not constitute a crime.

They said holding flyers and blocking vehicles was not a crime as they were also exercising their freedoms of movement and expression.

The 11 were not formally charged with contravening Section 46 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, when they appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Vivian Ndlovu.

They are out on bail.
