Police target Zinasu as crackdown on constitutional amendment critics intensifies

The Zimbabwe Constitutional Movement (Zicomo) has strongly condemned a police raid on the Zimbabwe National Students Union (Zinasu) offices in Harare, describing the operation as a blatant attempt to criminalise student activism.

The raid, which took place on Wednesday, was reportedly carried out by officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Law and Order Section. According to Zicomo, the officers left a handwritten note ordering Zinasu president Liberty Hamauswa to report to the police.

In a sharply worded statement, Zicomo described the raid as an intimidation tactic designed to silence the influential student body, particularly in light of its vocal opposition to the proposed Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill.

“The timing of this raid raises serious concerns about the government's commitment to upholding democratic principles and engaging constructively with dissenting viewpoints,” the students body said.

The raid followed the detention of former Zinasu president Emmanuel Sitima, who was apprehended by police a day earlier.

Sitima remains in custody at Harare Central Police Station without clear charges, a situation Zicomo described as emblematic of a "broader trend of hostility and repression" against those opposing the constitutional amendments.

Zicomo has called on security forces to halt the targeting of activists and to respect the fundamental rights of citizens.

“We call upon the security forces and law enforcement officials to respect the rights of citizens, uphold the rule of law, and allow freedom of expression to flourish,” the statement added.

The organisation urged Zimbabweans to remain vigilant and united in defence of the country’s supreme law.

As the country approaches its 46th Independence (Uhuru) anniversary on Saturday, Zicomo called on Zimbabweans to honour the spirit of liberation by increasing their opposition to the 2026 Constitutional Amendment Bill.
