A HARARE family is up in arms against police officers who have allegedly swept under the carpet the case of a road accident that crippled their son.

The family has since taken up the matter with the Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) alleging corruption against the police officers involved.
The accident occurred on September 21 this year in Kuwadzana 2. Chengetai Guta (30), who was on his way to work, was nearly killed in the accident, according to his mother, Lucy Guta.
Guta said she suspected that police were bribed to ignore the matter following her series of follow-ups at Kuwadzana 2 Police Station.
Harare police provincial spokesperson Inspector Tadious Chibanda could neither confirm nor deny the matter, but referred questions to deputy national police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, who was not immediately available for comment.
But Guta said she had raised the matter with the complaints desk at the PGHQ and was keen to engage Home Affairs minister Kembo Mohadi over the alleged corruption at Kuwadzana Police Station.
“He (Chengetai) was knocked down while on his way to take a truck to go to Beitbridge for his business. When I got to the scene (of the accident), I concluded he was dead while the driver of the car appeared drunk in his car. Police came, but they did not do the measurements and other important investigations on the matter, but we all thought they knew what they were doing,” Guta said.

“After weeks without any police action, we followed up the matter and we realised a lot of things, like the name of the driver, had been changed on the papers.
“The officer who came to the scene, identified as Magura, was called by his boss and he apologised saying it was a mistake. We were referred to the police traffic section in Warren Park, but again there is no movement.”
Guta also accused the family of Philemon Muzengeza, who allegedly knocked her son down, of ignoring them during their hour of need.
She said she wanted the Home Affairs minister to know of corruption at Kuwadzana Police Station and that a lot of people were angry with how several matters including rape cases were being swept under the carpet.
The driver of the vehicle, Muzengeza, believed to be a Bindura University student, was not picking up his phone yesterday, but his cousin, the owner of the car, Denis Kabikira, told NewsDay they did not bribe anyone and promised to sell cattle to raise money to assist the Guta family.
“It’s my car that my cousin was driving. I don’t know whether or not he had a driver’s licence, but he was not drunk. He was probably tired because he was coming from Bindura,” Kabikira said.
“As a family, we are talking to see what we can do to help. It might not be tomorrow, but something is coming.”
