SOCIAL media networks like Facebook and Twitter are increasingly becoming an important tool for community building and promoting social action in Zimbabwe.

Previously, the platforms were for interacting online with like-minded people, keep connected with family members scattered around the globe as well as advertise goods and services.
One group of Zimbabweans on Twitter, calling themselves #Twimbos have set up a Twitter fundraising initiative, #TwimbosGivingHope, to assist in cash and kind, children living at Tichakunda Early Childhood Development Centre in Hatcliffe, Harare.
The initiative started off as a tweet by @Amblujay :“#Twimbos how about we adopt a Children’s Home this festive season, donate clothes and food . . .”
The tweet received overwhelming responses from Twimbos and various institutions that pledged assistance in various forms.
“Our current project is to collect food items, clothing, books, stationery, school uniforms as well as raise funds to donate to Tichakunda for this festive season, hopefully by the 24th of December 2014.” said Shingi Mangoma, a Gweru based musician, who is chairing the fundraising.
A temporary drop off point for donations has since been set up at the corner of Jason Moyo Avenue and Leopold Takawira Street at Mobile Lab and an account has been created with Steward Bank with the account name being Twimbos Giving Hope and account number 1001857378.

Popular entertainment joint, the Book Café has also chipped in, giving #TwimbosForHope a venue on December 18, for what has been dubbed The Christmas Benefit Concert where artistes like Pah Chihera, Tehn Diamond, Mangoma, Mudiwa, Evans Mapfumo, GoodChild, Juwela, Bry360 and Slick Artie will perform.
Proceeds from the concert will go to Tichakunda Center and this show will also be a platform for people to drop off the donations they have.
Tehn Diamond has also agreed to use his shows as collection points for all donations coming through.
“This is an all-encompassing, developmental project and everyone’s input is important. Help us build,” said Mangoma
