Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the two incidents, saying investigations were still underway to ascertain the cause of the drownings.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police can confirm receiving two cases of drowning in Midlands of two MSU students on May 9, so investigations are underway to establish the cause and circumstances leading to the incidents,” Charamba said.

Although information surrounding the deaths is still unclear, Simbarashe Masvivi (20), a Level 1 Semester 2 Law student, allegedly drowned at Insukamini Dam on his way back from a church outreach programme in Maboleni, Lower Gweru, after they stopped for a photo shoot.

The other victim, Talent Marunga (19), a first year Honours Degree in Economics student, allegedly drowned, while attempting to swim in Whitewaters Dam near WhaWha Prison where he had gone with other students for a school developmental programme.
