HARARE, Jun 5,2026 (NewsDay Live) - Bangladesh has started the process of setting up a diplomatic mission in Harare as part of efforts to deepen bilateral ties and expand cooperation with Zimbabwe.
Newly-accredited Bangladesh ambassador to Zimbabwe, Shah Ahmed Shafi, announced the development after presenting his credentials to President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on Thursday.
Shafi said Dhaka wants to strengthen its presence in Zimbabwe and across other emerging markets as Bangladesh's economy continues to grow.
“We will open our diplomatic mission in Harare. With the growth of the economy, we are opening up in some African countries and Latin American countries,” he said.
The ambassador noted that relations between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh dates back to 1981 and have continued to grow over the years.
He said cricket has played a significant role in bringing the two nations closer, with the sport helping to raise Zimbabwe's profile.
“The people of Bangladesh know Zimbabwe, particularly for cricket here,” Shafi said.
Beyond sports, Bangladesh is seeking to broaden economic cooperation with Zimbabwe, particularly in the textile and garment manufacturing sectors.

Shafi said discussions with Mnangagwa focused on exploring opportunities for collaboration in value addition and industrial development.
“Now, my country is becoming an industrial country and I spoke with His Excellency, the President of Zimbabwe, that we will explore the possibility of cooperation, particularly in the textile and garment industries,” he said.
Shafi presented his letter of credence to President Mnangagwa together with Peru’s ambassador-designate Jose Javier Augusto Shaw and Amedi Camara of Mauritania.
