BULAWAYO, Jun 2,2026 (NewsDay Live) - A 33-year-old man from Filabusi has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting two infant sisters aged three years and seven months.

The offender was convicted on two counts of aggravated indecent assault when he appeared at the Gwanda regional court, recently.

The court sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment on each count, with the sentences running concurrently, resulting in an effective 20-year jail term.

The offences occurred on February 24, 2026 in Chief Maduna's area after victims’ mother had left the children alone at home while she attended to her cropfields.

She told the court that she rushed home after her infant made a distress call, only to find both of them sexually abused by the perpetrator who was still at the scene.

The matter was immediately reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.

The two children were referred to Filabusi District Hospital for medical examinations.

The National Prosecuting Authority says the case has renewed calls for stronger community vigilance and child protection measures to safeguard minors from abuse.
