A 35-year-old man from Kenzamba will spend the next 18 years behind bars for the brutal rape of an 80-year-old woman and a subsequent jailbreak, the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court has ruled.
Ricardo Majoni was initially sentenced to a combined 19 years – 18 for the sexual assault and one for escaping lawful custody.
The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently, resulting in an effective 18-year prison term.
Prosecutors said the horror unfolded on January 10, 2024, around 10 a.m.
The elderly victim was sitting alone at her homestead when Majoni approached.
Sensing danger, she tried to retreat to her bedroom, but Majoni followed and threatened to set the house on fire with her inside.
Terrified, the woman attempted to flee to a neighbour’s home. Majoni caught her, tripped her to the ground, and raped her.
The attack ended only when a local resident appeared on the scene, prompting Majoni to run off.
