BULAWAYO, Apr. 22 (NewsDay Live) – Emakhandeni-Luveve MP Descent Bajila has donated food hampers to community health workers in his constituency in appreciation of their vital role in providing grassroots healthcare services.
The donation, which included 100 kilogrammes of rice, comes at a time when many community health workers are facing financial challenges following reduced support from international development partners that previously funded their allowances.
Bajila said community health workers play a critical role in strengthening the country’s health system by visiting homes, monitoring children’s health, and assisting patients who rely on home-based care.
“We recognise that a functional health system is not one that cures the most diseases. A functional health system is one that has the least number of patients. It is therefore important for us to recognise community health workers because they are the people who go door-to-door into homes, examining our children and supporting those who rely on home-based care,” Bajila said.
He added that although resources are limited, it is important for communities and leaders to appreciate and support the work done by these frontline health volunteers.
“It is important for us as a country to recognise their work with the little that we have. For a long time, their support was largely based on donations from development partners across the world. However, we also know that at any given time development partners can withdraw funding, as has happened globally with respect to funding from the United States,” he said.
He said community health workers have been significantly affected, particularly in terms of the allowances they receive.
