Rain-related accidents claim 3 lives

THREE people have died while 23 others were injured in road traffic accidents recorded this week as heavy rains continue to affect driving conditions across the country.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said police recorded a total of 97 road traffic accidents during the period, with some involving vehicle collisions.

She urged motorists to reduce speed and exercise extreme caution due to slippery roads and poor visibility caused by the rains.

“We have recorded 97 accidents this week, resulting in three fatalities and 23 injuries,” she said.

“Most of these accidents are due to speeding and failure to exercise caution during rainy conditions.”

Msebele urged drivers to slow down as rains make roads slippery, which increases the risk of losing control of vehicles.

“Motorists to watch out for potholes and flooded sections of roads, that speeding under such conditions could easily lead to serious accidents,” Msebele said.

“Drivers must give way to other vehicles and avoid reckless behaviour on the roads.

“Some people speed through flooded areas and splash water, thinking it is impressive, but such actions can easily cause accidents.”

She also urged motorists to avoid crossing flooded rivers and dams.
