Affordable quality health care delights rural Chihota folks

THE opening of a state-of-the-art medical centre at Landors Business Centre, Chihota, has brought smiles to villagers who can now access quality medical care.

Dubbed Landos 24 Medical Centre, the medical facility in Marondera West constituency, opened its doors to the villagers in July this year and has been a game changer in revolutionising health care systems in the area.

The centre is owned by a young medical couple Ronald and Tsitsi Makanda.

Ronald is a professional medical doctor, while Tsitsi is a qualified nurse.

“We realised that this area needed a health centre as most patients had to travel either to Mahusekwa or Marondera for medical attention,” Ronald told NewsDay Weekender recently.

“Our catchment area is wide, we assist even farmers from as far as Beatrice.”

Unlike other private medical centres which charge exorbitant consultation fees, the Makandas have been applauded by the community for their reasonable charges.

“Our consultation is just US$6, we want the community to access medical care without any hustle,” Tsitsi said.

“Since opening doors, we are offering free services to those aged 65 and above, and those less than five.”

The medical centre’s catchment area stretches close to Harare South, Beatrice, Mahusekwa, Halfways, St Peters and Furamera, among many other places.

In October, the medical centre offered free services to women as part of commemorating the Pink Month.

“We are now moving to secure a dispensing licence so that we establish a one-stop centre here,” Ronald said.

“By this, we want to open a pharmacy, laboratory for tests and X-rays so that we don’t burden patients with travelling to Marondera or Harare, for example, to have some lab tests.

“In a few months, we will be operating on full throttle, we will be having our own ambulances and this is our dream. The most refreshing thing is that the community is appreciating what we are offering.”

Currently, Landos 24 Medical Centre is operating with two medical practitioners, four nurses, two nurse aides and four other general staff.

Marondera Rural District Council chairperson Jeremiah Gwanzura said the centre came at an opportune time.

“We are happy to have this medical centre in Chihota for the better of our communities,” Gwanzura said.

“It is a right for the villagers to have access to quality health care and we applaud Landors 24 Medical Centre for investing in rural Marondera.

“We call upon other medical experts to consider establishing such facilities and as council, we are ready to assist.”

Despite operating on solar energy due to unavailability of electricity, a cutting-edge health facility has emerged, defying the odds of limited resources and geographical constraints to deliver world-class healthcare to the local community.

This state-of-the-art facility is a beacon of hope for the people of Chihota, providing access to quality medical care that was previously unimaginable in this rural setting.

With its sleek design and advanced medical equipment, the facility is a testament to the power of innovation and passion-driven development.
