NBS depot teller up for US$58K theft

A NATIONAL Building Society (NBS) central cash deport teller on Tuesday appeared before a Harare magistrate facing a charge of theft.

Smith Chigwana (45), who is employed as central cash depot teller, allegedly stole US$58 417. He was jointly charged with Atharvan Investment security officer Stalin Rundora (30). They appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai.

They were remanded on US$100 bail accompanied by conditions.

State prosecutor Lawrence Gangarawe told the court that from September 5 to 10 this year, Chigwana, who was responsible for handling, depositing and withdrawing of bulk cash, connived with Rundora to process a withdrawal of US$58 417 and converted it to their own use.

The company observed anomalies on the transaction and inquired with Atharvan Investment (Pvt) Ltd if it had received the money and it indicated that it was not aware of the transaction.

It is alleged that on Sunday, detectives from CID CCD Harare conducted investigations, which prompted Chigwana to surrender US$51 420 to the complainant.

The accused persons were subsequently arrested.
