POLICE in Mahusekwa, Mashonaland East province, have arrested an 18-year-old man who allegedly kidnapped two children before raping a 22-month-old baby for ritual purposes.

The incident, which occurred in Munyikwa village under Chief Chihota resulted in police arresting a bar tender after the teenager had implicated him as the brains behind the kidnapping.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachi yesterday confirmed the incident.

“Police are investigating a case in which a man kidnapped two minors. We appeal to the public to quickly report such cases so that the culprits are brought to book as well as to assist the victims,” he said.

According to police, on February 28 at around 4am, the suspect (name withheld), broke into the room where the minors — a four-year-old boy and his 22-month-old sister were asleep along with their mother.

The mother fled while shouting for help, and left the children behind. She returned with some villagers but the children were missing.

The four-year-old brother later returned home and told the mother that his sister had been kidnapped by the suspect.

A police report was made and the suspect was nabbed while hiding in the bush in Gunzvenzve village.

He led them to the minor, who had been sexually abused. The accused  implicated a 25-year-old bartender in Chihota who was also arrested.
