Festival director Walter Wanyanya told NewsDay Life & Style yesterday that they had decided to host a kick-off event in preparation for the festival.

“We are hosting a kick-off to the annual festival event tonight at 6pm as we count down to the annual festival. We have a bigger line-up this year, and it will carry some of the best acts in Africa. We are running it under the theme #thecity #thepeople #themusic,” he said.

“This year, we will make sure we build on what we started on last year.”

Wanyanya said they were eyeing an increased number of music lovers and had extended the number of days from one to three.

“The aim of the festival is to bring together music lovers from all walks of life to Harare and celebrate life through live music that unites us as a people. We also have extended the festival from a one-day event last year, that had 6 000 people, to three days; two days being festival concert days and one day set aside for development purposes,” he said.

Wanyanya said they received over 500 applications from artistes, of which 80% are from other countries for this year’s edition.

“We will always have acts from different countries. When we made a call for artistes to apply, we received over 500 applications and 80% of those were from out of Zimbabwe. Tickets selling places and the line-up of artistes will be announced in due course,” he said.

Last year’s festival saw Mi Casa (pictured) and Yvonne Chaka Chaka, known as the “Princess of Africa”, sharing the stage with the late music superstar Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, including internationally-acclaimed and award-winning afro-fusion group, Mokoomba.
