Zimbabwe’s annual advertising awards competition has been extended to include public considerations, with the launch of a new trophy called the NewsDay People’s Award.

The AMH Ngoma Awards, sponsored this year for the first time by Alpha Media Holdings, honour and promote excellence in advertising communications and include a series of categories related to press, broadcast, electronic, outdoor and other forms of communication media. The awards ceremony will be held Thursday night.

In addition to the people’s choice category, the organisers have opened the awards dinner to business people who may be interested in attending and a workshop involving a leading South Africa brand expert has been set up to follow the awards ceremony, also open to the business community.

This year it has been decided to encourage public interest and involvement, so a People’s Award has been created, the winner of which is decided by a vote of people visiting the awards website, www.ngoma-awards.com, and perusing the adverts to decide which one they like the best.

The winning ad will receive the trophy.

The names of all the people who selected the winning entry as their choice will be entered into a lucky draw, and the winner will receive a year’s free subscription to NewsDay.

“We hope this will encourage the public to have a say in what they like about advertising communication by identifying the ad they like the best from the more than 200 entries received for 2010,” said a spokesman for the organisers and sponsors.

A visit to the website will show visitors how to view the entries and how to vote for their choice of the best one.

The AMH Ngoma Awards for 2010 were open to all advertising prepared and used during the period January 1 to December 31 2010, and a total of 228 entries were received by the closing date, well up on the previous record entry of 165.

A panel of judges has been perusing the entries and have decided on winners in the various categories, including the So Much More Award for Campaign of the Year, which is sponsored by MultiChoice Zimbabwe.

The awards will be presented at a gala dinner on Thursday March 31, at which the top advertisements as judged by the panel of adjudicators will be announced.

The dinner will be open to all advertising agencies, advertisers and members of the public who are interested in advertising communications.

Anyone wishing to attend the dinner – which is open to the public, can contact Judy Macdonald at [email protected] or telephone (04) 870306 for more information.

A workshop on advertising, hosted by the organisers of the AMH Ngoma Awards, has been set up for the morning of Friday April 1.

External judge, Thebe Ikafaleng is a leading marketing personality in South Africa and a respected authority on brand management.

Ikalafeng, who has been recognised as one of the Top 10 Thinkers in marketing in Southern Africa, will focus on international and regional perspectives in his presentation.
